"First make an
appointment with us, during your appointment let the staff know your
intention to adopt, ask for
adoption form, fill out the adoption form, return filled out adoption form. "Next you "Volunteer to assist with the daily running of KARE. During the time you volunteer a bird will "choose" you as his/her person. After that you begin weekly volunteering, four to six weeks dependent upon various criteria. Much depends on the birds emotional needs. Volunteering is more than just visiting with the bird, it's learning what it is to be a dedicated bird owner... Cleaning cages is just one of the activities you'll be involved in at K.A.R.E. Helping with the bird chores is also included. You keep the bird area clean by sweeping, vacuuming, change the birds papers, mop and shampoo the carpets in the bird areas when needed... "This is just the beginning! We try to use the dish washer but sometimes You have to get dirty... You are expected to assist with fund raisers to help pay for the birds medical bill... We will train you in warning signs of poor health, your birds nutritional requirements, and birdie first aid... |
|
We will also train you
in birdie first aid, give you a list of local Avian Vet's and show you what you
need in your first
aid kit for your bird. You will "not" be allowed to take a bird from K.A.R.E. without a first aid Kit!!! We'll teach many aspects of avian first aid...from trimming nails to pulling blood feathers...At the end of your "required visiting" time period you will show your first aid kit and make arrangements for adoption fee's. You will be briefed on what you can expect from K.A.R.E. over the next 90 days. It is at this point that you start your 90 day foster of the bird or birds you are adopting. During this time period K.A.R.E. will visit with you and the bird/birds you are adopting once announced and once unannounced each month... After the honeymoon period (90 day foster) is over. You will finalize your adoption of the bird/birds with K.A.R.E. We recommend you continue to be part of the K.A.R.E family as we provide a number of services for bird owners and their pets. Special Note: If at any time, even after the bird/birds are adopted, we find the birds are badly treated or neglected, K.A.R.E. reserves the right to take back custody of said bird/birds at the expense of the bird owner/care taker. |
